Abstract
The alliance involves multiple stakeholders working together to address the challenge of global illiteracy. One of the key strategies is the use of Bloom, a free, open-source book writing software developed by SIL International, in partnership with USAID and World Vision. Bloom enables local authors and the global education community to write, collect, translate, publish, and share millions of reading books in local languages. The software is designed to be simple and accessible, making it possible for individuals and communities to create high-quality books that meet the needs of early grade learners in developing countries. The All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development is a series of grant and prize competitions launched in 2011 by USAID, World Vision, and the Australian Government. The competition leverages science and technology to create and apply scalable solutions to improve literacy skills of early grade learners in developing countries. The winner of the Enabling Writers competition, SIL International, developed Bloom, which has been widely adopted as a key tool in the fight against global illiteracy. USAID is committed to helping all children learn to read through several intervention strategies, including the use of Bloom and other digital tools. The agency is working with partners around the world to promote literacy and improve educational outcomes for children in developing countries. By leveraging the power of science, technology, innovation, and partnership, USAID aims to accelerate development results and make a lasting impact on the lives of millions of children.
