Abstract
The quality of life in these towns has suffered due to a lack of financial and economic support from the federal government. As a result, municipal governments struggle to provide adequate social support to their citizens. The municipal governments rely on industry for funding, but community members are excluded from the decision-making process. Many Russians seek better standards of living by leaving for more prosperous cities. The Healthy Family - Healthy Family Alliance Development Challenge aims to improve the quality of life in Nevinnomyssk, a city in the St. Petersburg region of southern Russia. The city is home to Eurochem, one of the world's largest fertilizer producers, which is the main industrial presence and employer in the city. Eurochem is also a significant investor in the municipal government. The alliance seeks to improve health service delivery, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage civic participation in environmental protection and environmental resource preservation. The alliance has implemented several initiatives to address the health challenges in Nevinnomyssk. A reproductive health center for teenagers has been established, which has already served over 100 youth. More than 50 local gynecologists have been trained, as well as 10 health providers and 45 specialists on health-focused programs. A hotline providing health information to the community has been set up, training pediatricians and nurses to counsel clients on breastfeeding by phone. The alliance has also focused on promoting healthy lifestyles among the local population. A city-wide health fair was organized, attracting over 15,000 local residents. The health fair provided an opportunity for residents to access health services and learn about healthy lifestyles. The alliance has also established a hotline providing health information to the community, which has been instrumental in promoting healthy lifestyles. The alliance has also implemented initiatives to promote civic participation in environmental protection and environmental resource preservation. The alliance has worked with local residents to establish a community garden, which has provided a space for residents to grow their own fruits and vegetables. The alliance has also organized workshops and training programs for local residents on environmental protection and environmental resource preservation. The Healthy Family - Healthy Family Alliance Development Challenge has been a collaborative effort between USAID and Eurochem. The partnership has been supported by a grant of $887,600. The project has been implemented over a period of three years, from 2006 to 2009. The project has made significant progress in improving the quality of life in Nevinnomyssk, and has provided a model for other alliances to follow.
