2018 · 22 pages

Abstract
The discussions aimed to understand the challenges and willingness of shepherds to restore landscapes. The FGDs were conducted in Baskinta and Reyfoun, with a total of 10 participants. The discussions covered topics such as social dynamics, land use, and reforestation, and were facilitated by LRI staff. The FGDs revealed that shepherds face challenges such as limited access to grazing lands, conflicts with local authorities, and lack of information on reforestation efforts. The shepherds also expressed concerns about the impact of reforestation on their livelihoods and the need for alternative measures to address grazing issues. The discussions highlighted the importance of involving shepherds in decision-making processes and providing them with information and support to protect newly forested lands. The LRI's participatory approach aims to engage concerned stakeholders in new projects, including shepherds. The initiative's focus on rangeland management and reforestation is part of a broader effort to protect and restore green areas and forests in Lebanon. The FGDs provided valuable insights into the challenges and needs of shepherds and will inform the development of strategies to address these issues. The FGDs also highlighted the importance of addressing the social dynamics between shepherds, residents, and local authorities. The discussions revealed that shepherds often face conflicts with local authorities and residents, which can hinder their ability to access grazing lands and protect their livelihoods. The LRI's efforts to engage shepherds in decision-making processes and provide them with information and support are critical to addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable land management practices. The FGDs in Baskinta and Reyfoun provided a platform for shepherds to share their experiences and perspectives on reforestation and rangeland management. The discussions highlighted the need for a more inclusive and participatory approach to land management, one that takes into account the needs and concerns of all stakeholders, including shepherds. The LRI's efforts to engage shepherds in decision-making processes and provide them with information and support are critical to promoting sustainable land management practices and protecting the natural environment.
