Abstract
The survey aimed to assess the perceptions of Lebanese citizens on various aspects of their lives, including the economic situation, trust in institutions, satisfaction with public services, security, and conflict. The survey was conducted by Social Impact, Inc., under the Performance Management and Support Program for Lebanon (PMSPL II) for USAID/Lebanon. The survey used a cross-sectional design, with a sample of 2,400 respondents selected from all 25 governorates in Lebanon. The sample was allocated across governorates to ensure representation of the population. The questionnaire consisted of 150 questions, covering topics such as economic situation, trust in institutions, satisfaction with public services, security, and conflict. The survey found that Lebanese citizens reported a decline in their economic situation between Wave 1 (2019) and Wave 2 (2021). The majority of respondents (71%) reported that their economic situation had worsened, while 21% reported no change. The survey also found that trust in institutions had decreased, with 63% of respondents reporting a decline in trust in the government, and 55% reporting a decline in trust in the parliament. In terms of satisfaction with public services, the survey found that respondents reported a decline in satisfaction with healthcare services, with 55% of respondents reporting a decline in satisfaction. The survey also found that respondents reported a decline in satisfaction with education services, with 51% of respondents reporting a decline. The survey also examined the economic growth of Lebanon, finding that the labor force participation rate had decreased between Wave 1 and Wave 2, from 44% to 41%. The survey also found that the unemployment rate had increased, from 11% to 14%. The survey also found that the majority of respondents (62%) reported that they had reduced their household expenses due to the economic situation. In terms of entrepreneurship, the survey found that 45% of respondents reported that they had started a business in the past year, while 21% reported that they had closed a business. The survey also found that 55% of respondents reported that they had faced challenges in accessing finance for their business. The survey also examined the gender dynamics in Lebanon, finding that 45% of respondents reported that they had experienced domestic violence in the past year. The survey also found that 55% of respondents reported that they had faced challenges in accessing healthcare services due to their gender. Overall, the survey found that Lebanese citizens reported a decline in their economic situation, trust in institutions, and satisfaction with public services between Wave 1 and Wave 2. The survey also found that the labor force participation rate had decreased, and the unemployment rate had increased. The survey also found that respondents reported facing challenges in accessing finance for their business and healthcare services due to their gender.
