Abstract
The project is managed by Abt Associates Inc. and is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), under Associate Cooperative Agreement no. GPO–A-00-09-00007-00. The project aims to improve the health sector in Ethiopia, with a focus on the Hawassa Industrial Park (HIP). The assessment of health needs in Hawassa Industrial Park was conducted in 2019. The assessment aimed to identify the health needs of workers in the park and to provide recommendations for improving health services. The assessment was conducted by a team of experts from the Private Health Sector Project, led by Mesfin Haile MD, MPH, Chief of Party. The assessment found that the health services available to workers in the park are limited. The majority of workers reported that they do not have access to health services, and those who do have access reported that the services are inadequate. The assessment also found that workers are not aware of their rights to health services, and that there is a lack of awareness about occupational health and safety. The assessment identified several key findings, including the need for improved health services, increased awareness about occupational health and safety, and better governance and regulation of health services. The assessment also found that workers are in need of health education and information, and that there is a demand for additional health services, including health screenings and emergency services. The assessment made several recommendations, including the need for improved health services, increased awareness about occupational health and safety, and better governance and regulation of health services. The assessment also recommended the establishment of a referral system for emergency and higher-level services, and the development of a financing plan for health service provision. The assessment also identified several key stakeholders, including the Government of Ethiopia, the Private Health Sector Project, and the Hawassa Industrial Park management. The assessment recommended that these stakeholders work together to improve the health and safety of workers in the park. The assessment used a combination of methods, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups, to gather data from workers in the park. The assessment also reviewed existing literature and policies related to occupational health and safety. The assessment found that the health needs of workers in the park are significant, and that there is a need for improved health services and increased awareness about occupational health and safety. The assessment provided several recommendations for improving health services and promoting health and health-seeking behavior among workers in the park. The assessment also identified several key priorities for health promotion and safety in the factories, including the need for improved health services, increased awareness about occupational health and safety, and better governance and regulation of health services. The assessment recommended that these priorities be addressed through a combination of policy changes, training programs, and community outreach activities.
