Project to help A.I.D./W and USAID Missions to implement Section 119 of the Foreign Assistance Act, concerning the conservation of biological diversity in developing countries.
1986

Abstract
The U.S. Department of Interior"s Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) will implement this project of S&T"s Forestry, Energy and Natural Resources Office (S&T/FENR). An FWS advisor will provide TA to AID/W and USAID staff on a variety of activities related to biological diversity. The advisor will, inter alia, review the adequacy of A.I.D."s efforts regarding biological diversity; identify potential projects; identify the information systems, networks, and governmental and nongovernmental agencies whose help A.I.D. needs in addressing biological diversity concerns; recommend research priorities; and help A.I.D. prepare its annual report to Congress on biological diversity. The advisor will also prepare scopes of works for three other project activities, namely, to: (1) conduct two to four demonstrations to obtain information and data for use in project planning and the environmental review process; (2) undertake a joint S&T/FENR-Africa Bureau conservation initiative in Africa (activities being considered include feasibility studies on the multiple use, sustained yield management of two biological resources - natural afromontane tropical forests in Central Africa and African savanna and thorn-scrub habitats); and (3) develop a training program on biological diversity and overall natural resource development and conservation for use by developing country organizations and by A.I.D. Amendment of 6/8/87 extends PACD from 9/30/87 to 12/30/88 to allow for completion of project activities by FWS, and authorizes a grant to the Rockefeller Brothers Fund to help establish a collaborative private/public sector consultative group on biological diversity.
