USAID. MISSION TO BURUNDI
Project to support Burundi"s nascent democracy.
1993

Abstract
The project, which complements a nonproject assistance program (6950134), consists of two components: (1) training activities, to be implemented by the U.S. Information Agency (USIA); and (2) activities to strengthen the democratic process, to be implemented by local and international NGOs and PVOs. In the first year of the project, USIA will sponsor a media workshop in Burundi to promote more objective reporting, as well as three study tours to the United States -- one for journalists, one for parliamentarians, and one for professionals involved in the criminal judicial system (prosecutors, lawyers, academics, and human rights experts). Similar training activities will be developed in succeeding years. Activities to strengthen and expand the democratic process will be proposed and implemented by NGOs and PVOs. Examples of these activities include: programs to promote and sustain a peaceful change of government; democracy education and training for key decision makers, including members of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches of government; strengthening the political awareness and effectiveness of community and local groups; TA for institutional development; and information dissemination. For further information on individual activities, search DOCS under this project number.
