USAID. BUR. FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. OFC. OF AGRICULTURE
Project to help International Agricultural Research Centers (IARC"s) overcome specific constraints (lack of equipment or of specially trained personnel) to food production research by providing grants to U.S.
1985
Abstract
research institutions or scientists to carry out small-scale, cooperative research with IARC"s. The Cooperative State Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture will implement the project. Collaborative research will focus on: (1) specific problems encountered by IARC"s (e.g., biochemical screening of seeds); (2) development of new knowledge to allow IARC"s to enhance the scope of their programs (e.g., regarding the heritable variation within a plant species in extracting and using irrigation water); and (3) development of research methodology, including laboratory work (e.g., development of a rapid and inexpensive technique for quantitatively determining all sulfur-containing acids as a help in developing pulse crop varieties that are relatively high in amino acids). Research problems are expected to be resolved within 2 years and no grant will extend longer than 3 years. Participating IARC"s will include both the 13 sponsored by the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and selected others not sponsored by CGIAR.
