Subproject to support a program of the Societe Haitienne d"Etudes et d"Execution des Projets Agricoles (SHEEPA) to conduct research aimed at improving the genetic stock of fruit trees in Haiti and to distribute improved fruit seedlings to small farmers.
1983
Abstract
Existing SHEEPA nurseries at Bon Repos and Hinche will be upgraded for the project"s research component, for which specimens from Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and the United States will be gathered. Ten extensionists from Haiti"s Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Rural Development (DARNDR) will receive on-the-job training. Further, three field nurseries will be established, and 14 monitors will be trained to operate the nurseries, distribute seedlings, and implement training programs for farmers. More specifically, SHEEPA will distribute, at a nominal fee, 350,000 fruit tree seedlings to small farmers in the Central Plateau region, and will also oversee a permanent program of monitoring and extension activities for farmers and school groups in the project area, using audiovisual techniques and site visits. Stress will be laid on cultivation, pruning, and grafting techniques, as well as on soil conservation and intercropping. Amendment of 10/84 increases the seedling production/distribution target to 640,000, enhances the training and research programs, increases the quantity of improved plant material available to SHEEPA, and expands the target group of participating farmers to 2,000.
