Abstract
In Sudan, SCF will provide strong support to a Ministry of Health (MOH) CS program in Um Ruwaba District, north Kordorfan Province. The program will: (1) immunize 28,000 children under age 3 against 6 diseases; (2) vaccinate 80,000 women of childbearing age against tetanus; (3) promote oral rehydration therapy (ORT) by training village health workers (VHW"s) and families and through radio, brochures, and newly adapted educational materials in schools; (4) administer Vitamin A to children and nursing mothers; (5) provide nutrition and family planning education; (6) establish chloroquine revolving funds in 60% of villages; and (7) establish community health committees in selected villages. The MOH will assume responsibility for immunization activities after one year and for ORT training after two years. In Cameroon, SCF will develop community-based activities in 3 rural areas - Doukoula, extreme North Province; Yokadouma, East Province; and Ntui, Central Province. This program will support: immunization of 80% of children under age 3 against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, and tuberculosis and 80% of women of childbearing age against tetanus; improved access to protected water supplies; growth monitoring, prenatal care, child spacing, and venereal disease prevention; training of VHW"s in ORT; and training of families in the 10 child-protective behaviors. In Malawi, SCF will integrate CS activities into its existing integrated community development program in Mbalachanda, northern Malawi. The program will focus on vaccination, ORT, clean water, malaria treatment, detection and prevention of nutritional deficiency diseases, training in child feeding, pneumonia treatment, development of a community-based information system, and ante-natal care and birth spacing. SCF will also sponsor a CS training workshop on village-level information gathering and data base management to be held in Zimbabwe and attended by 12-14 PVO"s.
