Abstract
In Malawi, ADRA will train 20 village health workers (VHW"s) at a 6-week hands-on course in epidemiology, training skills, nutrition, and methods of monitoring and reporting. When the VHW"s return to their own villages, they will set up village health committees to identify the health needs of the communities. The project will respond to these needs by completing 15-25 primary health care interventions, with emphasis on oral rehydration therapy (ORT), immunization, nutrition education, and family planning promotion. In Rwanda, ADRA will train 28 village vaccinator/educators and hire 2 nurse supervisors to carry out CS activities in 9 target communities. With ADRA assistance, these trainees will vaccinate 75% of children aged 0-5 years for measles, DPT, and polio and train 80% of mothers in ORT and available family planning methods. In Haiti, ADRA will train 15 health agents through a 4-week course focusing on CS interventions such as ORT and an expanded program of immunizations together with instruction in basic data collection and community mobilization techniques. The community agents will conduct a local baseline survey and needs assessment and record the births and deaths of children under 5 years. The project will also train 80% of mothers of children under 5 years in ORT; extend immunization to 75% of children under 5 years for measles, DPT, tuberculosis, and polio; promote breastfeeding; and provide training in family planning and elementary hygienic practices (e.g., boiling of water, sanitary disposal of human and animal waste).
