Abstract
PES covers the period 1/81-2/82 and is based on an attached evaluation (XD-AAN-728-A) by an external evaluation panel (EEP) and on the CRSP response to the EEP recommendations. Excellent progress has been made since the prior EEP review in 9/80. A total of 41 research subprojects (SP"s) are underway in 12 LDC"s, although, given the project"s short timeframe, there have been only limited opportunities for major research accomplishments. Research areas include: socioeconomic studies; agronomy; plant physiology; plant breeding; crop utilization and nutrition; plant pathology; and entomology. The agronomy SP"s, in particular, have the potential for transfer of scientific achievements to LDC farmers. Some of the plant physiology SP"s, on the other hand, may not be applicable in LDC"s. The recent inclusion of socioeconomic studies in the CRSP is particularly encouraging; these studies should be extended to other geographic regions, with priority given to research on market development and price policy. Linkages have been formed with national research programs in these countries, as well as with CIAT, ICRISAT, and IRRI and with other A.I.D. CRSP"s. Additional linkages, through student training, both in the United States and in LDC"s, and through visits of principal CRSP investigators, have been increasing each year, but are expected to level off eventually due to funding constraints. Attached are the CRSP response to the EEP review and individual project descriptions presented by the principal investigators.
