Abstract
The tool is based on the World Health Organization's (WHO) AMS practical toolkit and is intended for self-administration, joint assessments, and application by mandated authorities. A center of excellence for antimicrobial stewardship is a specialized program within a health care institution that supplies high concentrations of expertise and related resources in a particular medical area. To be designated as a center of excellence, a health care facility must meet certain criteria, including defining the goals and success for its antimicrobial stewardship program, establishing a governance structure, and adopting antimicrobial stewardship-specific protocols and guidelines. The D-CEAMS tool is divided into two parts: Part A, which assesses the availability of certain indicators, and Part B, which evaluates the outcomes and impact of antimicrobial stewardship interventions. The tool is designed to identify strengths that contribute to optimal antimicrobial use, patient safety, and reduced antimicrobial resistance. The D-CEAMS tool assesses various aspects of antimicrobial stewardship, including leadership commitment, accountability and responsibility, and AMS actions. The tool also evaluates the availability of standard treatment guidelines, regular AMS team reviews and audits, and the accessibility of AMS team advice and feedback. The D-CEAMS tool is intended to be applied at least once a year as a mechanism for maintaining best practices in antimicrobial stewardship. The tool is designed to create a culture of measuring antibiotic use at the health care facility level, develop a pool of antimicrobial stewardship experts, and build the capacity of health care facilities to support the hospital and other health facilities. The D-CEAMS tool is a structured, closed questionnaire that is based on the WHO AMS practical toolkit. The tool is intended for health care facilities that have an active antimicrobial stewardship program and have been implementing antimicrobial stewardship interventions for at least six months.
