Abstract
One key strategy is to upgrade Primary Health Care Centers (PHCCs) to Model Clinics (MCs), which are equipped with modern medical equipment, stocked with necessary supplies, and staffed with well-trained providers. These MCs will serve as a model for future replication throughout Iraqi provinces. A five-day workshop was held from March 22-26, 2014, to discuss the goals and achievements of PHCPI and the importance of MC replication in Najaf. The workshop brought together 15 participants, including the Director General of the Najaf Directorate of Health, university deans, and health program managers. The establishment of the Multi-Lateral Primary Health Care Development Committee was a significant outcome of the workshop. The Committee consists of representatives from USAID/PHCPI, the Najaf Directorate of Health, the Najaf faculty of Medicine, and the Najaf faculty of Nursing and Medical Sciences. The Committee will play a crucial role in the expansion and institutionalization of PHCPI Model Clinic concepts and clinic upgrades throughout the Najaf Province. It will meet monthly to assess PHC quality and recommend strategies for sustained improvement. After all PHCPI-targeted clinics have been fully upgraded, the Committee will be responsible for identifying and upgrading future target clinics. This will enable the Najaf Province to ensure continuous high-quality primary health care for those in the catchment areas of PHCPI-targeted clinics and the development and upgrade of future clinics. The Multi-Lateral Primary Health Care Development Committee provides vital oversight and direction towards the accomplishment of USAID's PHCPI goal to improve quality of and access to primary health care. The Committee's efforts will contribute to the development of a reliable health system in Najaf, equipped with modern medical equipment, well-trained providers, and efficient health services. This will ultimately improve the health outcomes of the population in the Najaf Province. The Committee's work will also involve the dissemination of clinical guidelines, updated by PHCPI, to university staff for teaching undergraduate students. These guidelines will be printed and made available as references throughout the University, ensuring that future healthcare professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality primary health care services.
