Abstract
The project focuses on improving maternal and child health services and supporting the Government of Iraq to improve the standards and quality of 36 "model clinics." These model clinics serve as a prototype for future replication and investment in primary health care throughout Iraq. The Al-Wajehia Medical Clinic, located in the Muqdadid district of Diyala Province in Central Iraq, is one of the model clinics that has benefited from the project. The clinic serves a population of 33,039 and provides diagnostic services, including screening for various diseases, to hundreds of people every day. However, the laboratory unit at the clinic was previously located in a small room with improper ventilation and poor lighting, resulting in patient dissatisfaction with the quality of care. To address these issues, USAID's Primary Health Care Project recently supplied new laboratory equipment and renovated the Al-Wajehia Medical Clinic. The renovation included the installation of filing cabinets, benches for patients to sit while waiting to be seen, air conditioning units to improve ventilation, and new light fixtures. The new equipment and renovated space have significantly improved the working conditions for the laboratory staff, who now work in a safer, healthier, and more spacious environment. The new laboratory at the Al-Wajehia model clinic has been well-received by the laboratory staff, who stated that the renovated space is now more functional and comfortable. The improved working conditions are expected to enhance the quality of care provided to patients, who will benefit from the availability of modern diagnostic equipment and a more efficient laboratory process. The success of the Al-Wajehia Medical Clinic renovation is a testament to the effectiveness of the USAID Primary Health Care Project in improving primary health care services in Iraq. The USAID Primary Health Care Project in Iraq has made significant progress in improving maternal and child health services and strengthening the delivery of primary health care throughout the country. The project's focus on improving the standards and quality of model clinics, such as the Al-Wajehia Medical Clinic, is expected to have a lasting impact on the health care system in Iraq. The project's success is a result of its partnership with the Iraqi Ministry of Health and its commitment to improving the quality of care provided to patients.
