Abstract
The project aims to improve food production, processing, and marketing in the country. Component 1 of the project, Increasing Productivity, focuses on enhancing agricultural productivity through the multiplication of high-yielding crop varieties. During the first quarter of fiscal year 2014 (October-December 2013), monitoring activities were conducted in various fields, including C-3 bean multiplication fields, B-2013 Cassava Fields, and A-2012 Primary Multiplication Fields-Cassava. The monitoring revealed that crop yields were improving, with demonstration plots showing a 60% increase in yield when applying recommended practices. Component 2, Improving Market Efficiencies, aims to enhance market access and efficiency for farmers. Activities undertaken during the first quarter included credit intermediation, market information system development, conditioning and value-added processing, transport and market infrastructure development, and improved commercial relations. The project also provided training to farmers on good agronomic practices and integrated pest management. Component 3, Capacity to Respond to Market Opportunities Reinforced, focuses on building the capacity of farmers to respond to market opportunities. Activities undertaken during the first quarter included training of trainers for cassava farmer field schools and monitoring of training offered to farmers. The project also established community multiplication fields for peanuts and soybeans. The project has made significant progress in improving food security and increasing household income among farmers. The project has also improved market access and efficiency for farmers, enabling them to sell their produce at better prices. The FPPM project has established partnerships with various stakeholders, including local NGOs, government agencies, and private sector organizations. The project has also developed a market information system to provide farmers with timely market information and prices. The project's monitoring and evaluation system has been established to track progress and identify areas for improvement. The project's geographic focus is on the provinces of Bandundu, Bas-Congo, and Kinshasa. The project's timeframes are from October 2013 to September 2014, with a total budget of $8.3 million. The project's recommendations include scaling up the project's activities to reach more farmers and improving the project's monitoring and evaluation system to ensure better tracking of progress.
