2016 · 34 pages

Abstract
The program aims to improve early grade literacy among children in Malawi. The manual is a product of collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), scholars, practitioners, and education development professionals. The manual is divided into 11 sessions, which are scheduled to take place over two days. Day 1 covers sessions 1-7, while Day 2 covers sessions 8-11. Each session has a specific objective, activity, and time allocation. The sessions cover topics such as registration and welcome, expectations of the training, objectives of Module 3, reflecting on the teaching of English, and planning schemes of work and scripted lesson plans. One of the key objectives of the training is to familiarize teachers with the English teachers' guide for Term 3 and the learners' book. The manual provides a detailed outline of the activities and exercises that teachers are expected to complete during the training. These activities include self-introductions, sharing expectations, and previewing preliminary pages of the Term 1 teachers' guide. The training also focuses on teacher attitude and behavior, with sessions dedicated to charting teacher behavior and discussing effective use of scripted lesson plans. Additionally, the manual includes annexes that provide sample schemes of work, tips on lesson preparation, and phonetic symbols to aid pronunciation of words in the blending and segmenting activities. The EGRA Reading Intervention Program is designed to improve the reading skills of children in Malawi by providing teachers with the necessary training and resources to deliver effective reading instruction.
