Abstract
The initiative aims to address stigma and its negative consequences on individuals and society. Stigma is an unfavorable attitude and beliefs towards someone because they are different in some way from others. This can manifest as gossip, pointing fingers, isolating a person, or making a person feel uncomfortable. It can also be internal, where an individual does not feel good about themselves. Stigma can be particularly damaging for adolescents living with HIV, leading to feelings of isolation, hopelessness, and a reluctance to take medication. The Empathy Drama and Song program brings together boys and girls in small groups to create dramas and songs that highlight the impact of stigma and the importance of showing respect. Group one focuses on creating a drama about how stigma hurts adolescents living with HIV, while group two composes a song about the harm caused by stigma towards certain groups. Group three creates a drama about the benefits of showing respect to people living with HIV, and group four writes a song about the importance of respect regardless of HIV status. During the program, participants are given time to discuss and create their dramas and songs. After a brief period, the groups come together to perform their creations. This is followed by a discussion, where participants are asked to reflect on the examples presented and consider ways to show respect to adolescents living with HIV or affected by HIV. They are also encouraged to think about potential barriers to showing respect and how to overcome them. The program emphasizes the importance of reducing stigma and promoting respect for all individuals, regardless of their HIV status. It highlights the consequences of stigma, including the reluctance to be tested, disclose HIV status, or take medication, which contributes to the spread of HIV. By promoting empathy and respect, the program aims to create a supportive environment where individuals can feel confident to take preventive measures and protect themselves and others. Ultimately, the Empathy Drama and Song program seeks to empower adolescents to make a commitment to reduce stigma and promote respect for those living with HIV or affected by HIV. Participants are encouraged to make a personal commitment to take action, such as saying one thing they will do to reduce stigma, to create a more supportive and inclusive community.
