Abstract
The program aims to improve the health and education outcomes of girls in developing countries. One of the key components of the ASPIRE program is the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Training Manual, which provides guidance on the management of school WASH facilities. The manual is divided into seven modules, each focusing on a specific aspect of WASH management. Module 1 explores the relationship between water, sanitation, hygiene, and water-borne infections, using the F-diagram as a framework for understanding the interconnectedness of these factors. The F-diagram illustrates the flow of feces, urine, and other waste products from the body to the environment, highlighting the importance of proper hygiene and sanitation practices. Module 2 focuses on the three key hygiene practices: hand washing with soap, consistent and proper use of latrines, and drinking safe water. Hand washing is emphasized as a critical practice for preventing the spread of water-borne infections, with guidelines provided on hand washing methods, frequency, and facilities. The importance of proper latrine use and management is also stressed, including the need for regular cleaning and maintenance. Module 3 addresses the management of school WASH facilities, including the composition and roles of school WASH committees and learners. The module highlights the importance of involving learners in the management of WASH facilities and provides guidance on the composition and roles of school WASH committees. Module 4 focuses on general hygiene and cleanliness of latrines and management of school toilet facilities, emphasizing the importance of keeping WASH facilities clean and providing practical steps for improving toilet use and management. Module 5 addresses the management of school WASH facilities, including latrine/urinals management, maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction. The module emphasizes the importance of maintenance and provides guidance on monitoring functionality, maintenance, and desludging of school pit latrines. Module 6 focuses on urinals, including their suitability, advantages, and disadvantages. Module 7 addresses menstrual hygiene management, including personal hygiene and menstrual hygiene management practices. The manual also includes a list of tables and figures, providing additional information and resources for WASH practitioners. Table 2:1 summarizes safe water handling practices, while Table 3:1 lists key hygiene behaviors for school children. Table 4:1 defines a clean toilet, and Table 4:2 provides guidance on managing facilities. The manual is a valuable resource for WASH practitioners, providing practical guidance and tools for improving WASH outcomes in schools.
