Abstract
External evaluation covers the period 1983-2/89. After initial delays, activities have gathered momentum and impressive progress has been made. To expand private sector delivery of FP services, the project has trained and provided informational materials to more than 3,200 doctors and midwives; some 2,000 of these have also received IUD kits. An IEC campaign, with attractive, well-designed, and tested materials, has been carried out in 11 cities with plans to include 16 more in 1989. Social marketing campaigns were formally launched in four cities in 2/89 with citywide public relations events that included many high-level dignitaries. Expansion to six more cities is planned in the next six months. TA provided to the BKKBN and involved nongovernmental and commercial organizations has been utilized well. Coordination among the institutions has improved, with a substantial increase in information-sharing and a shift to the private sector of implementation responsibilities. Another measure of progress is the growth in FP awareness and use. According to a national survey, knowledge of contraceptive methods in urban areas increased from 90% in 1983 to 97.5% in 1987, and prevalence rose from an average of about 42% in 1983 to 54% at the end of 1987. Of urban contraceptive users, 25% now procure them from private sources as compared to 10% in 1983. (Author abstract, modified)
