Abstract
Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance in April 1991, the University of Arizona"s Office of Arid Lands Studies (OALS) was asked to develop a specialized database on famine mitigation. More than 1,700 citations were collected from online databases such as CAB ABSTRACTS, AGRIS, AGRICOLA, and NTIS, as well as from visits to selected libraries in the United States and Europe. Many of the documents cited are "non-traditional," including technical reports, field reports, project papers, and reports from PVO"s such as Save the Children and CARE. The database"s strength lies in its coverage of Sudan, Angola, Ethiopia and its focus on nine short-term interventions with potential long-term benefits: (1) early warning; (2) rapid rural assessment; (3) cereal crops/cropping systems; (4) gardens; (5) seedbanks; (6) livestock; (7) water resources; (8) food-for-work and cash-for-work; and (9) conflict modification. Also included are some general references on famine, market interventions, and on other countries and regions that have experienced famine-related problems. Entries are listed alphabetically by author; title, subject, and country indexes are included. Most of the documents cited are available at OALS.
