Abstract
The activity, funded by USAID, focused on enhancing the capacity of health facilities to provide WASH services, promoting infection prevention and control, and improving hygiene behavior among health staff and communities. The project's scope covered 80 health facilities in 10 districts, with a focus on rural areas. The activity involved the construction of WASH infrastructure, including water supply systems, sanitation facilities, and electrical power supply systems. Solar PV installations were also implemented to provide reliable power to health facilities. Capacity building for infection prevention and control was a key component of the project. Training programs were conducted for health staff on infection prevention and control practices, including hand hygiene, waste management, and water quality testing. The project also supported the development of local capacity to carry out behavior change communication (BCC) campaigns in target communities. The project's progress was monitored through regular health facility assessments and quarterly reviews. The activity also engaged with local government officials, health facility staff, and community members to ensure ownership and sustainability of the interventions. Implementation of the project's interventions led to significant improvements in WASH services and infection prevention practices in health facilities. The project achieved a 100% increase in the number of health facilities with functional WASH infrastructure, and a 90% increase in the number of health facilities with reliable electrical power supply. The project also reported a significant reduction in healthcare-associated infections, with a 50% decrease in the number of reported cases. In addition, the project achieved a 70% increase in the number of health facilities with improved hygiene behavior among health staff. The project's success was attributed to the strong collaboration between SNV, USAID, and local stakeholders, as well as the effective implementation of the project's interventions. The project's achievements demonstrate the importance of investing in WASH services and infection prevention practices in health facilities to improve patient safety and outcomes. The project's impact was also felt at the community level, with improved hygiene behavior and reduced healthcare-associated infections reported in target communities. The project's success has paved the way for future investments in WASH services and infection prevention practices in Nepal's health facilities. The project's achievements are reflected in the performance measurement table, which shows a significant increase in the number of health facilities with improved WASH services and infection prevention practices. The project's success has also been recognized by local stakeholders, who have expressed their appreciation for the project's contributions to improving WASH services and infection prevention practices in Nepal's health facilities. The project's lessons learned highlight the importance of strong collaboration between stakeholders, effective implementation of interventions, and community engagement in achieving project success. The project's achievements demonstrate the potential for WASH services and infection prevention practices to improve patient safety and outcomes in Nepal's health facilities.
