Abstract
The project aimed to enhance dairy productivity and improve the livelihoods of smallholder dairy farmers. Initial assessments identified key challenges, including limited access to quality feed, inadequate veterinary care, and lack of market information. To address these challenges, the project implemented a range of interventions. These included the establishment of dairy feed production units, provision of veterinary services, and development of a dairy market information system. The project also focused on capacity building for dairy farmers, with training programs on improved dairy management practices and animal health care. One of the key components of the project was the establishment of a network of dairy extension workers. These workers provided on-farm support and guidance to dairy farmers, helping them to adopt improved dairy management practices. The project also established a system for monitoring and evaluation, which enabled the tracking of project progress and impact. The project had a significant impact on dairy productivity and farmer livelihoods. Average milk yields increased by 25% among project participants, while the number of dairy farmers selling milk to the market increased by 30%. The project also helped to improve the overall quality of dairy products, with a significant reduction in the incidence of milk-borne diseases. The project's geographic focus was on the Punjab province, with a particular emphasis on the districts of Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan. The project's time frame was approximately three years, during which time it reached over 10,000 dairy farmers. The project's recommendations for future dairy development initiatives include the need for continued support for dairy farmers, particularly in terms of access to quality feed and veterinary care.
