Abstract
The conference was supported by World Learning and the U.S. International Council on Disabilities (USICD) and was supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The conference brought together 559 participants with disabilities from all Divisions and States in Myanmar. The participants were from diverse backgrounds, including physical disability, hearing disability, visual disability, and intellectual disability. The conference aimed to discuss the barriers faced by persons with disabilities in Myanmar and to create a national level cross-disability coalition. The conference was organized by the Working Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (WCRPD), which consisted of 16 disability-focused organizations. The primary goal of the conference was to form the Myanmar Council of Persons with Disabilities (MCPD), which would serve as the foundation of a nationwide coalition focused on advocacy and the advancement of disability rights and inclusion in Burmese society. The conference sessions covered a range of topics related to disability rights, including the adoption of a national level disability law that is in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The conference also aimed to promote the rights of persons with disabilities in Myanmar, which is a country with a long history of conflict and a lack of awareness about disability rights. The country has undergone a period of reform in recent years, transitioning from military rule to a civilian government.
