Abstract
A study conducted in 2014 analyzed data from eight countries: Albania, Burundi, Cambodia, Gabon, Ghana, Indonesia, Namibia, and Rwanda. The study aimed to investigate the effects of health insurance on the utilization of maternal health services. The study found that health insurance coverage varies significantly across countries. In Africa, 44% of women and 34% of men have health insurance coverage, while in Asia, 23% of women and 17% of men have coverage. The study also found that women with higher education levels, urban residence, and higher household income are more likely to have health insurance coverage. The study used propensity score matching (PSM) to estimate the effects of health insurance on the utilization of maternal health services. The results show that health insurance coverage is positively associated with the utilization of antenatal care, delivery care, and postnatal care. The study found that women with health insurance coverage are more likely to receive prenatal care, have a cesarean delivery, and receive postnatal care. The study also found that the quality of health insurance coverage affects the utilization of maternal health services. The study found that women with employer-based health insurance coverage are more likely to use maternal health services compared to those with private health insurance coverage. The study found that the average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) of health insurance on the utilization of maternal health services is significant. The study found that the ATT of health insurance on the utilization of antenatal care is 0.14, the ATT of health insurance on the utilization of delivery care is 0.21, and the ATT of health insurance on the utilization of postnatal care is 0.15. The study concludes that health insurance coverage has a significant impact on the utilization of maternal health services in low- and middle-income countries. The study recommends that governments and health care providers should promote health insurance coverage to improve access to maternal health services. The study also highlights the importance of improving the quality of health insurance coverage to improve the utilization of maternal health services.
