Abstract
Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID) in response to the growing request from the global Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) community to better understand where donor support is provided for Neglected Tropical Diseases that are addressed through Preventive Chemotherapy. USAID and DFID are both supporters of the World Health Organization’s 2020 Goals for the control and elimination of NTDs and the London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases. This document aspires to clarify where major donors are providing financial support to country-level programs to advance the WHO 2020 Goals. The following donors have provided data for this version of the Donor Landscape: The END Fund, a private philanthropic initiative to combat the five most common neglected tropical diseases; the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, a charitable foundation established in 2012 to eliminate avoidable blindness and empower young leaders; the United Kingdom Department for International Development, a government department responsible for administering overseas aid; and the United States Agency for International Development, a government agency primarily responsible for administering civilian foreign aid. USAID has gathered and assembled this information on behalf of the contributing donors. The NTD Donor Landscape focuses on the five Neglected Tropical Diseases that are addressed through Preventive Chemotherapy: lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, and soil-transmitted helminthes. The document highlights donor support by country, disease, and complementing investments in Operations Research and Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP). The data presented is at the donor level, which in most cases is one level higher than the mechanism or partner providing the support in country. The Donor Landscape does not indicate the mechanism used to provide support in country, such as Non-governmental Organizations, direct financial support to Ministries of Health/Finance, or regional mechanisms. Table 1: PC-NTDs Donor Support by Country, 2015, indicates donors providing financial support to a country for any PC-NTD related activity for program support, Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention, and/or Operations Research. The support ranges from targeted investments to large-scale investments. Table 2: PC-NTDs Donor Support by Disease, 2015, indicates the specific disease area(s) a donor is financially supporting in country. The diseases include lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, and soil-transmitted helminthes. Table 3: Donor Support by Complimenting Investment, 2015, indicates by country where donors are providing financial support for Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP) and Operations Research. The NTD Donor Landscape provides a map of the Neglected Tropical Diseases Donors Landscape, highlighting countries benefiting from financial support from major donors for PC-NTD activities. The document highlights the specific disease areas supported by each donor and the level of support provided. The data presented is intended to clarify where major donors are providing financial support to country-level programs to advance the WHO 2020 Goals. The document highlights the following countries as receiving support from major donors for PC-NTD activities: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mauritania, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The document also highlights the following countries as receiving support from major donors for specific disease areas: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Yemen, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, PNG, Vietnam, Haiti, and Solomon Islands. The NTD Donor Landscape provides a comprehensive overview of the Neglected Tropical Diseases Donors Landscape, highlighting the specific disease areas supported by each donor and the level of support provided. The document is intended to clarify where major donors are providing financial support to country-level programs to advance the WHO 2020 Goals.
