Abstract
Agency for International Development (USAID) for the period 2006-2011. The project aims to strengthen health systems in countries supported by USAID, with a focus on improving financing, governance, and operations. Health Systems 20/20 works to build sustainable capacity of local institutions and address health system barriers to the use of life-saving priority health services. The project focuses on several key areas, including capacity building, costing and sustainability planning, governance, health insurance, human resources for health, measuring health systems performance, performance-based incentives, resource tracking, and priority health issues. These areas are addressed through a range of activities, including briefs, reports, tools, case studies, and journal articles. Capacity building is a critical component of the project, with a focus on strengthening the capacity of local institutions to manage and deliver health services. This includes training and technical assistance to improve the skills and knowledge of health workers, as well as support for the development of policies and guidelines to improve health system performance. Costing and sustainability planning is another key area of focus, with the project working to help countries develop and implement sustainable financing plans for their health systems. This includes conducting cost analyses and developing business plans to ensure the long-term viability of health programs. Governance is also a critical component of the project, with a focus on improving the governance and management of health systems. This includes support for the development of policies and guidelines to improve health system performance, as well as technical assistance to improve the management and oversight of health programs. The project also focuses on health insurance, with a goal of increasing access to health insurance for vulnerable populations. This includes support for the development of health insurance programs, as well as technical assistance to improve the management and oversight of these programs. Human resources for health is another key area of focus, with the project working to improve the skills and knowledge of health workers. This includes training and technical assistance to improve the skills and knowledge of health workers, as well as support for the development of policies and guidelines to improve health system performance. Measuring health systems performance is also a critical component of the project, with a focus on developing and implementing tools and systems to measure health system performance. This includes the development of health system assessments and the creation of an online health systems database to provide country-level data on health system performance. Performance-based incentives are also a key area of focus, with the project working to develop and implement performance-based incentives to improve health system performance. This includes the development of performance-based incentives for health workers, as well as technical assistance to improve the management and oversight of these incentives. Resource tracking is another critical component of the project, with a focus on improving the tracking and management of resources for health programs. This includes the development of resource tracking systems and technical assistance to improve the management and oversight of these systems. The project also focuses on priority health issues, including HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, and family planning. This includes support for the development of policies and guidelines to improve health system performance, as well as technical assistance to improve the management and oversight of health programs. Overall, the Health Systems 20/20 project is a comprehensive initiative to strengthen health systems in countries supported by USAID. The project focuses on a range of critical areas, including capacity building, costing and sustainability planning, governance, health insurance, human resources for health, measuring health systems performance, performance-based incentives, resource tracking, and priority health issues.
