Abstract
This paper is a reference guide for the use of HOMES, a demographic model and computer package developed to project the number and demographic characteristics of households. HOMES employs a unique methodology to determine the entire household membership in a fashion consistent with underlying mortality and fertility trends. To illustrate the range of information available from HOMES, a summary of its application to South Korea is provided. A detailed discussion of the principles that underlie the computer model is presented, using census and survey data from Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and South Korea. A technical description of HOMES includes instructions for calculating the number of households, children of a household head, grandchildren of a household head, surviving parents of a household head, other household members, and offspring weights. Procedures for running HOMES on a mainframe computer and sample output are also provided. Includes figures, exhibits, and 24 tables.
