Abstract
The program aims to enhance the capacity of Government of Vietnam (GVN) officials to conduct environmental assessment and remediation activities. The training program focuses on the application of HHRA concepts, site prioritization, HHRA problem formulation, risk management, and HHRA case studies using data from contaminated sites in Southeast Asia. The objectives of the USAID Technical Assistance and Training Program include enhancing the capacity of research on toxic chemicals and analysis of dioxin content in samples to international standards. The program also aims to assess potential and long-lasting consequences of toxic chemicals on human health, build capacity in research for overcoming the consequences of toxic chemicals, and train a team of scientific researchers to address toxic chemicals/dioxin in Vietnam. The Risk Assessment Toolkit is a platform that provides trainees with an online and offline resource for managing contaminated sites. The toolkit includes direct learning content, an online knowledge sharing and collaboration system, and data-secure interactive tools designed to lead participants through the HHRA process. The toolkit is applicable to other contaminated sites, including heavy metals. The HHRA Training Program consists of two workshops, with a mentorship period in between. Workshop 1, conducted in October 2017, covered the basics of HHRA, site prioritization, and HHRA risk characterization. Workshop 2, conducted in March 2018, reviewed and presented risk assessment case studies, risk management, and risk communication. The training program focuses on the application of HHRA concepts, including site prioritization, HHRA risk characterization, risk management, and risk communication. The program also includes HHRA case studies using data from contaminated sites in Southeast Asia, such as Danang Airport and Bien Hoa Airbase. The training program aims to enhance the capacity of Vietnamese stakeholders to conduct environmental assessment and remediation activities, and to address the consequences of toxic chemicals and dioxin in Vietnam. The HHRA Training Program is aligned with the GVN's National Action Plan to Overcome the Consequences of Toxic Chemicals used by the U.S. in the War in Vietnam. The program's objectives are to enhance the capacity of research on toxic chemicals, assess potential consequences of toxic chemicals on human health, build capacity in research, and train a team of scientific researchers to address toxic chemicals/dioxin in Vietnam. The training program is designed to provide participants with in-depth training on the application of HHRA concepts, site prioritization, HHRA risk characterization, risk management, and risk communication. The program also includes hands-on application of risk calculation tools and presentations by each group on risk calculation results. The training program aims to enhance the capacity of Vietnamese stakeholders to conduct environmental assessment and remediation activities, and to address the consequences of toxic chemicals and dioxin in Vietnam.
