Abstract
The meeting provided a forum for various departments within the Ministry of Health, selected partners, and international improvement experts to share experiences, clarify the role of Government partners, and discuss lessons learned from implementing health care quality improvement initiatives. The meeting aimed to identify key challenges and opportunities for improving health care nationwide. Key challenges for health care quality improvement in Uganda were identified as leadership, the link between quality improvement, supervision, inspection, monitoring, and evaluation, and the need for starting, championing, sustaining, and priority setting in quality improvement. Discussion points also highlighted the importance of approaches to improvement, successes to be repeated, and what not to repeat in quality improvement initiatives. Recommendations were made to address these challenges, including leadership throughout the health system, harmonization of partners and quality improvement approaches, infrastructure for health system strengthening, and integrating all technical areas and partners. The meeting emphasized the need for a coordinated approach to quality improvement, with a focus on leadership, infrastructure, and partnerships. The Ministry of Health's Quality Assurance Department played a key role in organizing and facilitating the meeting, which brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to share experiences and discuss best practices. The meeting provided a platform for participants to clarify the role of Government partners, discuss lessons learned from implementing health care quality improvement initiatives, and identify key challenges and opportunities for improving health care nationwide. The meeting also highlighted the importance of partnerships and collaborations in quality improvement initiatives. The Ministry of Health has partnered with various organizations, including the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, to support quality improvement initiatives. These partnerships have provided technical assistance, capacity building, and financial support to help the Ministry of Health improve health care quality and outcomes. The Uganda Ministry of Health has made significant progress in improving health care quality and outcomes, particularly in areas such as maternal and child health, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. The Ministry has implemented various quality improvement initiatives, including the Quality Assurance Project, funded by USAID, and the Quality of Care Initiative.
