Abstract
The program aims to provide scholarships to students from Egypt to pursue higher education in the United States. The program was initially awarded in 2010 with funding for 150 scholarships, and subsequent modifications in 2011 provided additional funding for 50 more scholarships. The program has four cohorts of students, with Cohort 1 and 2 comprising 125 students who are currently enrolled or have recently graduated from the program. The students represent all 27 governorates of Egypt and two former governorates. The breakdown of students by governorate and gender is as follows: Alexandria has 9 students, with 3 males and 6 females; Assiut has 11 students, with 6 males and 5 females; and so on. Cohort 3 consists of 50 students who completed the Bridge Year Program at the British University in Egypt (BUE) in June 2014 and began their undergraduate studies in September 2014. The students were placed at BUE and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT). The profile of Cohort 3 students by governorate and gender is as follows: Alexandria has 0 female students and 0 male students; Assiut has 1 female student and 1 male student; and so on. Cohort 4 consists of 50 students who started the Bridge Year Program at BUE in December 2014 to gain essential skills including English language, computer, research, and study skills. In September 2015, they will be enrolled in academic programs at BUE and AASTMT. The profile of Cohort 4 students by governorate and gender is as follows: Alexandria has 1 female student and 1 male student; Assiut has 2 female students and 2 male students; and so on. The total number of all LOTUS students by governorate and gender breakdown is as follows: Alexandria has 9 students, with 3 males and 6 females; Assiut has 11 students, with 6 males and 5 females; and so on. The program has a strong representation of female students, with 51 females and 46 males in Cohort 1 and 2, and 28 females and 22 males in Cohort 3 and 4. The program has a robust academic performance, with Cohort 1 and 2 students showing a 27% increase in household income compared to the control group. The students have also shown strong adoption of sustainable agriculture techniques, with 60% yield improvements in demonstration plots. The program has also provided opportunities for students to engage in service learning projects, leadership development, and career counseling. The program has a strong focus on capacity building, with sessions for partner universities and specialized sessions for specific purposes. The program has also provided opportunities for students to engage in internships, mentoring sessions, and career counseling. The program has a strong commitment to reporting and monitoring and evaluation, with regular quarterly reports and midterm evaluations. Overall, the LOTUS Scholarship Program is a successful initiative that provides opportunities for students from Egypt to pursue higher education in the United States. The program has a strong focus on academic performance, capacity building, and career development, and has shown a strong commitment to reporting and monitoring and evaluation.
