Abstract
The programme began in 2018 with the goal of enhancing reading proficiency among students in Standards 2 and 4. Initial assessments revealed that a significant number of students struggled with reading, with only 27% of students in Standard 2 and 24% in Standard 4 able to read stories and comprehend texts. The programme focuses on three key areas: reading, comprehension, and fluency. Students are trained to read with accuracy, comprehension, and fluency, with a focus on reading stories, poems, and comprehension passages. The programme also emphasizes the importance of reading aloud, with students encouraged to read aloud to their peers and teachers. Implementation of the programme involved the distribution of reading materials, including books and reading guides, to students and teachers. The programme also included training for teachers on how to teach reading effectively, with a focus on phonics, fluency, and comprehension. The programme was implemented in all primary schools in Malawi, with a focus on improving reading skills among students in Standards 2 and 4. The programme has shown promising results, with a significant increase in reading proficiency among students. In Standard 2, the percentage of students able to read stories and comprehend texts increased from 27% to 88%, while in Standard 4, the percentage increased from 24% to 62%. The programme has also shown that students who receive regular reading instruction and practice are more likely to become proficient readers. The programme has also emphasized the importance of parental involvement in reading instruction. Parents are encouraged to read with their children and to provide a supportive environment for reading to take place. The programme has also recognized the importance of teacher training and support, with a focus on providing teachers with the necessary resources and training to teach reading effectively.
