Abstract
The project aims to improve reading and literacy skills among primary school students in Nigeria, particularly in the states of Bauchi and Sokoto. The research focuses on the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) tool, which is used to evaluate the reading skills of students in grades 2 and 3. The EGRA assessment revealed that students in grades 2 and 3 in Bauchi and Sokoto states were unable to read in their native language, Hausa. This finding highlights the need for improved reading instruction and materials in these states. In response, USAID and the governments of Bauchi and Sokoto states collaborated to conduct a research study on reading instruction and materials. The study aimed to identify effective ways to improve reading instruction and provide reading materials for students in grades 2 and 3. The research team developed a reading curriculum and materials, including a teacher's reflection journal, to support teachers in improving their reading instruction. The teacher's reflection journal, titled "Kundin Malamai," is a key component of the research project. The Kundin Malamai is a teacher's guide that provides a framework for reading instruction and assessment. The guide includes a set of questions and activities that teachers can use to assess student reading skills and provide feedback. The Kundin Malamai is designed to be used in conjunction with the EGRA assessment tool to provide a comprehensive picture of student reading skills. The research project also involved the development of a reading curriculum and materials for students in grades 2 and 3. The curriculum includes a set of short stories and activities that are designed to improve student reading skills. The stories are accompanied by questions and activities that teachers can use to assess student understanding. The Kundin Malamai is intended to be a useful resource for teachers in Bauchi and Sokoto states. The guide provides a framework for reading instruction and assessment, and it includes a set of questions and activities that teachers can use to assess student reading skills. The Kundin Malamai is also intended to be a useful tool for policymakers and educators who are interested in improving reading instruction and materials in Nigeria. The research project has several key findings and recommendations. The study found that students in grades 2 and 3 in Bauchi and Sokoto states were unable to read in their native language, Hausa. This finding highlights the need for improved reading instruction and materials in these states. The study also found that teachers in Bauchi and Sokoto states lack the necessary training and resources to provide effective reading instruction. The research project recommends that policymakers and educators in Bauchi and Sokoto states prioritize the development of reading instruction and materials for students in grades 2 and 3. The study also recommends that teachers in these states receive training and support to improve their reading instruction skills. Finally, the study recommends that the Kundin Malamai be used as a tool to support teachers in improving their reading instruction and assessment skills.
