The Non-Formal Education (NFE) Scheme of Work (Scope and Sequence) is a comprehensive guide for facilitators to teach Reading, Numeracy, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to learners.
2016 · 28 pages

Abstract
The scheme is structured into three parts, with 39 lessons for Reading, 29 lessons for Numeracy, and 36 lessons for SEL. The Reading part of the scheme focuses on developing learners' skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and writing. The lessons are designed to be taught in sequence, with each lesson building on the previous one. The topics covered include pre-reading and pre-writing skills, recognizing and manipulating sounds, connecting letters to sounds, and developing vocabulary. Lesson 1 introduces learners to pre-reading and pre-writing skills, including holding a writing implement correctly and drawing shapes and copying letters. Learners also demonstrate an understanding of directionality of print, holding a book with the text going in the right direction, and connecting written words with the communication of meaningful information and ideas. Lessons 2-4 focus on recognizing and manipulating sounds, including rhyming words, word boundaries in spoken sentences, and syllable segmentation. Learners also develop phonological awareness, including alliteration and rhyme, sentence segmentation, and syllable segmentation. Lessons 5-13 focus on connecting letters to sounds, including consonants and vowels. Learners master the sound of the letter, know its name, recognize it in print and write it (upper and lower case), and identify vocabulary words with target sound and identify individual target letters in written words. The scheme also emphasizes the importance of oral language reinforcement, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and writing skills. The lessons are designed to be interactive, with activities such as reading aloud, listening to stories, and writing target letters. The NFE Scheme of Work (Scope and Sequence) provides a comprehensive framework for teaching Reading, Numeracy, and SEL to learners. The scheme is designed to be flexible, allowing facilitators to adapt the lessons to meet the needs of their learners. By following the scheme, facilitators can ensure that learners develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their academic and personal lives.
