Abstract
The program addresses the educational needs of children with limited letter and vocabulary knowledge by pairing older students with younger students. Older buddies, typically in grades 3 to 4, are paired with younger buddies, typically in grades 1 to 2, to provide support and guidance in reading and writing skills. The program's objectives include helping younger buddies gain rich and varied practical experiences on letter and word awareness, and developing multiple dimensions of reading and writing skills from their older buddies. The program also aims to improve reading fluency, vocabulary, and social skills among participating students. To organize the Reading Buddies Program, schools identify the level of reading skills of students in grades 1 to 4 and use the higher-grade students' reading fluency results to determine whom to pair with lower-grade students. The program is typically implemented in reading and writing clubs in schools and reading camps in communities, with mother tongue teachers and reading volunteers overseeing and monitoring the program. Older buddies are trained and oriented on how to read to their younger buddies, and are encouraged to use context clues to better comprehend the text and figure out unfamiliar words. The program also includes journal writing activities, where buddy pairs write together in a reading buddies journal, using key vocabulary and responding to questions verbally, drawing pictures, and writing responses. The program has been shown to be effective in improving reading and vocabulary skills among participating students, as well as increasing social skills and confidence. Parents and caregivers are also eager to have their children participate in the program, as it has been shown to be helpful in improving and increasing reading, vocabulary, and social skills. The Reading Buddies Program is a valuable addition to reading programs in schools and communities, providing a supportive and engaging environment for students to develop their reading and writing skills. The program's focus on cross-age tutoring and partnerships allows students to learn from each other and develop important social skills, such as leadership qualities and self-esteem. The program's implementation involves several key steps, including identifying the level of reading skills of students, pairing older buddies with younger buddies, training and orienting older buddies, and monitoring the program's progress. The program's success is measured through evaluation and feedback from participating students, parents, and educators. Overall, the Reading Buddies Program is a valuable resource for schools and communities looking to improve reading and vocabulary skills among students, while also promoting social skills and confidence.
