Abstract
This document presents the assessment for Uganda. Section one describes recent trends and developments affecting women"s economic participation in the country and then identifies critical "entry points" for strengthening women"s economic participation. These include improving women entrepreneurs" access to sustainable financial services; developing indicators to assess the impact of recent economic reforms on women entrepreneurs and workers; increasing the participation of women-owned businesses as suppliers of goods and services to the public and private sectors; increasing women"s technical knowledge and skills in critical areas, primarily in growth sectors of the economy, production techniques, and marketing; strengthening women"s influence in economic policymaking by promoting linkages and exchanges between NGOs and other public and private organizations at the local, national, and international levels; and increasing women"s participation as contract farmers and increasing women"s control over income earned from nontraditional agricultural activities such as drying fruits and growing cut flowers. The second and longer section of the report presents a country profile from a gender perspective, covering Uganda"s labor force, business development, and organizational development. Annexes contain a bibliography and an extensive list of contacts in Uganda.
