Abstract
Since 2013, Power Africa has helped provide new or improved electricity to nearly 200 million people across Sub-Saharan Africa. The projects supported by Power Africa are generating nearly 7,600 MW of new, cleaner, and more reliable electricity, helping to mitigate climate change and end energy poverty. In 2023, the renewable energy production projects supported by Power Africa helped avoid more than 10 million tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing over 2.2 million gasoline-powered cars from the road for a year. The partnership's objectives include adding over 30,000 MW of cleaner and more reliable electricity capacity, connecting 60 million new homes and businesses to electricity by 2030, and improving lives for 590 million people by enabling health, education, and prosperity. Power Africa works with African governments, the private sector, international organizations, NGOs, and bilateral and multilateral donors to stimulate investment in Sub-Saharan Africa's energy sector. The partnership's unique approach is defined by a focus on transactions, on-the-ground support, working beyond the network, filling the financing gap, and reform led by Africa. Power Africa's priorities include ending energy poverty, accelerating a carbon-free future, reinforcing innovation in the American and African private sectors, and capacitating and empowering women. The partnership has supported 102 transactions that have reached financial close, resulting in 14,300 MW of new, cleaner, and more reliable electricity capacity, 6,700 MW of which is renewable energy. The projects have also resulted in 41.3 million new beneficiaries gaining access to electricity, 7,665 km of new transmission lines, and 45 million people receiving assistance from Power Africa. The partnership has also avoided 10 million tons of CO2 emissions and has implemented consultants and integrated consultants in over 40 countries.
