Abstract
Agency for International Development (USAID) on August 28, 2019. The program's objectives are to promote reduce, reuse, recycle (3Rs) and strengthen local and regional markets for recycled plastics, build social and behavior change (SBC) for 3Rs and sustainable solid waste management (SWM), increase capacity and effective governance of SWM and recycling systems, and support international fora, public-private partnerships (PPPs), and multi-stakeholder alliances. CCBO is working in seven focal countries in Asia, including the Maldives, and in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the Maldives, CCBO is piloting solutions to stop the flow of plastic pollution to the waters within and surrounding the country through work in the capital city of Malé. The program seeks to identify stakeholders who share the same interest and wish to collaborate, avoiding duplication of efforts and sharing knowledge to achieve innovative solutions. CCBO believes that local solutions are key to addressing the global challenge of ocean plastics pollution. In collaboration with global, regional, national, and local stakeholders, CCBO is implementing and testing locally relevant and sustainable approaches to reduce ocean plastics that can be shared, scaled, and tailored to meet the needs and local realities of individual communities, public and private sector actors, and waste value chains around the world. The Private Sector Landscape Analysis provides an overview of organizations that may be able to advance, amplify, and/or increase the sustainability of CCBO's activities in the Maldives. Through this report and analysis, CCBO has identified organizations relevant to the program's work in the Maldives and presents an analysis of organizations with the potential for partnership with the program. CCBO's private sector engagement strategy focuses on establishing partnerships with industry leaders to demonstrate measurable progress on the issue of ocean plastic pollution and reduce the amount of plastic entering the ocean. The program's team of technical experts and operational staff bring technical capacity, rigorous program performance monitoring and evaluation, and the ability to increase investment capacity and visibility to implement strategic solutions. The program's objectives in the Maldives include promoting 3Rs and strengthening local and regional markets for recycled plastics, building SBC for 3Rs and SWM, increasing capacity and effective governance of SWM and recycling systems, and supporting international fora, PPPs, and multi-stakeholder alliances. CCBO is working closely with local stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private sector entities, to achieve these objectives and reduce ocean plastics pollution in the Maldives. CCBO's analysis of the private sector landscape in the Maldives identifies several organizations with the potential for partnership with the program. These organizations include the Maldives Authentic Crafts Cooperative Society (MACCS), the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), and the Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance (MOPA). The analysis also highlights opportunities for collaboration between CCBO and these organizations to advance, amplify, and/or increase the sustainability of CCBO's activities in the Maldives. The program's recommendations for overcoming challenges in the Maldives include strengthening local and regional markets for recycled plastics, building SBC for 3Rs and SWM, increasing capacity and effective governance of SWM and recycling systems, and supporting international fora, PPPs, and multi-stakeholder alliances. The program also recommends continuing to establish partnerships with industry leaders and subject matter experts to demonstrate measurable progress on the issue of ocean plastic pollution and reduce the amount of plastic entering the ocean.
