Abstract
The CV writing clinic is a crucial component of such courses, focusing on maximizing the impact of a CV and avoiding common CV-writing mistakes. A well-structured CV is critical in showcasing a candidate's skills, experience, and achievements. The key sections of a CV include contact information, personal statement, work experience, education, and additional qualifications. Contact information typically includes full name, email address, phone number, physical address, and LinkedIn profile. The personal statement is a brief paragraph at the top of a CV that summarizes past experience and accomplishments. It should be concise, using key words and incorporating specific data and actionable statistics from work experience. This section provides an opportunity to catch the attention of a potential employer with a compelling introduction. Work experience is highlighted in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent position. Each experience should include position name, company, dates worked, bulleted achievements and responsibilities, and numbers and metrics to back up achievements. For example, an intern at Ruralight Limited in Chibok, Borno State, advanced the company's goals by training staff on software use, introducing prospective clients, and establishing a database of local residents not connected to the grid. Education is another critical section of a CV, particularly for those with less than 2 years of relevant educational experience. For such individuals, the education section should be kept simple, including graduation date, degree, and institution. However, for those with 2+ years of relevant educational experience, the education section should be placed above work experience and include additional details such as honors, dissertation title, relevant coursework, associations, and extracurriculars. Additional qualifications, including software, languages, certifications, publications, and awards, should also be listed in a CV. Proficiency levels, such as beginner, intermediate, or advanced, should be included for each qualification. For instance, a candidate may list proficiency in languages such as Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa, and French, as well as software skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, and SAP. Effective CV language is essential in conveying a candidate's skills and experience. Tips for writing effective CV language include being specific rather than general, active rather than passive, and fact-based (quantifying and qualifying). Additionally, CV language should be written to express, not impress, and be articulate rather than "flowery." It should also be written for people who scan quickly, making it essential to use clear and concise language. Action verbs are also crucial in a CV, as they help to describe a candidate's achievements and responsibilities. A list of action verbs includes coordinated, organized, accomplished, developed, improved, produced, supervised, influenced, directed, edited, collaborated, promoted, delivered, drafted, discovered, constructed, negotiated, determined, resolved, modeled, interpreted, summarized, tested, programmed, standardized, adapted, streamlined, encouraged, allocated, computed, managed, planned, instituted, established, created, validated, monitored, structured, processed, gathered, sold, utilized, addressed, collected, identified, researched, initiated, approved, enhanced, executed, synthesized, calculated, audited, supported, classified, defined, analyzed, operated, authored, published, evaluated, verified, and facilitated.
