2012 · 195 pages

Abstract
The assessment aimed to develop profiles and conduct capacity need assessments of processing units across Pakistan producing industrial products such as pulps, purees, and juice concentrates. A structured questionnaire was used to survey these units, focusing on technology, quality assurance, marketing, and human resource functions. The assessment covered 15 processing units in various regions of Pakistan, including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh. The units were involved in the production of aseptic packing, cold store, and export of fruits and vegetables. The assessment identified areas where USAID support could bring improvements in operations and marketing of the surveyed units. Key findings of the assessment included the need for modernization of machinery and equipment, improvement in quality assurance systems, and enhancement of marketing strategies. The assessment also highlighted the importance of human resource development, particularly in areas such as training and capacity building. The units surveyed were found to be facing challenges in terms of technology, quality, and marketing, which were hindering their ability to compete in the domestic and international markets. The assessment recommended that USAID support should focus on providing technical assistance and capacity building programs to the processing units. This could include training programs for management and staff, provision of modern machinery and equipment, and assistance in developing quality assurance systems and marketing strategies. The assessment also suggested that USAID should work with the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA) and the Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC) to provide support to the processing units. The assessment was conducted by Chemonics International under the USAID Firms Project, with the support of the USAID Technical Office in Pakistan. The assessment was part of the Private Sector Development (PSD) component of the USAID Firms Project, which aimed to promote private sector development and economic growth in Pakistan.
