Abstract
The project has established a system of community legal aid mobilizers, who are trained to support legal aid referrals, conduct legal literacy workshops, and provide legal counseling. These mobilizers are providing legal aid services in the townships of Maha Aung Myay and Pyi Gyi Ta Gon, improving access to justice for vulnerable populations. One notable success story involves sisters Ma Khaing and Ma Thin, who were subjected to physical abuse by an itinerant vendor in Yangon. The vendor filed a complaint against the girls with the Hlaing Tharyar Police Station and ward administrator, accusing them of theft. However, with the assistance of Phoenix, a civil society organization, the girls were located and returned to their mother. Phoenix also managed to resolve the alleged theft using their mediation process. This case highlights the importance of community-based services in promoting access to justice and protecting human rights. Another success story involves Ma Myint Myint, who was physically attacked and robbed by a taxi driver in Mandalay. With the support of a community legal aid mobilizer from Phoenix, she obtained legal aid representation and managed to have criminal charges filed against the driver. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of community-based services in providing support to victims of crime and promoting access to justice. During the life of the grant, Phoenix provided court representation for 5 clients and pre-trial assistance in 9 cases. They also offered legal advice, counseling, and mediation services to 471 persons. Additionally, Phoenix conducted two legal aid community mobilization training of trainers in both Hlaing Tharyar and Mandalay, to build capacity to assist clients. These efforts have contributed to promoting access to justice and protecting human rights in Myanmar. The community-based services provided by Phoenix are having a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable populations in Myanmar. By providing legal aid services, raising legal awareness in communities, and coordinating victim support with ward authorities and community-based organizations, Phoenix is helping to promote access to justice and protect human rights. The project's success is a testament to the importance of community-based services in promoting access to justice and protecting human rights in Myanmar.
