Abstract
The activity is implemented by Florida State University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, 10 colleges of education, and two universities, including the University of Zambia and Chalimbana University. The activity's goal is to equip targeted colleges of education and university faculty and lecturers with the skills and experience necessary to deliver effective instruction to teachers in training. This includes standardizing, aligning, and linking practical, evidence-based, pre-service teacher training and content with the primary school literacy curriculum. Additionally, the activity aims to equip pre-service teachers with the professional skills necessary to deliver quality literacy instruction in primary schools. During the reporting period from October 1 to December 31, 2023, the activity achieved all planned activities for the quarter. Two Zambian lecturers participated in semester-long residencies at Florida State University, where they attended courses on early grade reading, pedagogy, and research methods. The lecturers also attended the International Dyslexia Association's annual Reading, Literacy, and Learning Conference in Columbus, Ohio. They engaged in independent research, supervised by the TTE Project Director, and completed a master's thesis for one of the two fellows. The activity also continued the process of obtaining approvals from USAID, the Ministry of Education, and the U.S. Embassy for the next set of fellows to travel to Florida State University in the beginning of the next quarter. Furthermore, the activity supported the University of Zambia's Special Master's of Education Program in Literacy, Language, and Applied Linguistics, with 31 lecturers enrolled in the program as second-year students. Three TTE staff are serving as advisors to the lecturers, supporting the UNZA faculty. The activity's geographic coverage includes two universities offering primary degrees, UNZA in Lusaka district and Chalimbana University in Chongwe district, as well as 10 colleges of education offering diplomas for early childhood education and primary teaching. The target beneficiaries include 65 lecturers in the literacy and language study areas, 100 schools, and 600 educators who will work with 2,300 learners to reach a total of over 30,000 learners in primary schools. The activity's reporting period covers the period from October 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, and incorporates major project accomplishments in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, 10 colleges of education, and two universities. The activity's quarterly performance report presents TTE's performance covering the period from October 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, and highlights the achievements of the activity during the reporting period.
