Abstract
The activity began on September 30, 2020, and will conclude on September 29, 2023. The program is implemented by Florida State University, with the University of Zambia and School-to-School International serving as subcontractors. The Ministry of Education is a major counterpart organization. The activity goal is to equip targeted colleges of education and university faculty and lecturers with the skills and experience necessary to deliver effective instruction to teachers in training. The objectives include standardizing, aligning, and linking practical, evidence-based pre-service teacher training and content with the primary school literacy curriculum, and equipping pre-service teachers with the professional skills necessary to deliver quality literacy instruction in primary schools. The geographic coverage of the activity includes two universities offering primary degrees, UNZA in Lusaka district and Chalimbana University in Chongwe district, as well as 10 colleges of education offering diplomas for early childhood education and primary. The target beneficiaries include 65 lecturers in the literacy and language study areas, 100 schools, and 600 educators who will work with 2,300 learners to reach a total of over 30,000 learners in primary schools. During the reporting period from October 1 to December 31, 2022, the activity achieved the majority of its planned activities. Two lecturers from Malcolm Moffat and Kitwe colleges of education were in residency at Florida State University, where they attended courses on early grade reading, pedagogy, and research methods. They also attended the Literacy Research Association conference in Phoenix, Arizona, and engaged in independent research to further their Ph.D. dissertations. Additionally, TTE supported two master's degree candidates from Solwezi and Kitwe colleges of education to continue their master's degree coursework during the quarter. The candidates maintained good academic standing and are scheduled to graduate in August 2023. TTE also worked with the University of Zambia to develop a special Master's of Education program in Literacy, Language, and Applied Linguistics, which recognizes the TTE foundational literacy course and subsequent literacy and language module trainings as equivalent to the first year of the UNZA master's program. The program's quarterly performance report highlights the achievements of the activity during the reporting period. The report includes information on the activity's implementation progress, key highlights, management and administrative issues, monitoring, evaluation, and learning plan update, stakeholder involvement, crosscutting issues and priorities, and updates from prior performance reports.
