Abstract
The activity aims to enhance social and ecological risk management systems in Burkina Faso and Niger, with a focus on improving water security, sustainable productive land use, and management of shocks, risks, and stresses. The activity is part of the Resilience in the Sahel Enhanced (RISE II) project, which has been implemented in Niger and Burkina Faso since 2013. The activity is implemented across forty rural communes in the Centre-Nord, Est, and Sahel regions of Burkina Faso and in the Maradi, Tillaberi, and Zinder regions of Niger. The activity is divided into three components: Improved water security, Enhanced sustainable productive land use, and Improved management of shocks, risks, and stresses. In the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2020 (October-December 2019), TerresEauVie focused on completing recruitment activities, finalizing data collection and analysis, advancing communication and coordination among partners, operationalizing the shock responsive approach, and laying the groundwork for project activities. Formative research and thematic studies related to the Refine & Implement Period were completed in this quarter. In Niger, TerresEauVie made significant progress in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. Key activities included reviewing proposed joint activities with RISE II partners, submitting and sharing the Workplan with partners, and liaising and holding meetings with multiple partners in the region. TerresEauVie participated in joint planning workshops with HAMZARI and WFP for Maradi activities and with WFP, GIRMA, and WADATA for Zinder activities. The activity also attended WASH-cluster meetings in Maradi and participated in the Plans de Developpement des Communes (PDC) diagnostic workshop in Filingue, Tondikandiah, and Imanan communes in the Tillaberi region. TerresEauVie will continue to support the validation process in the two communes in the next quarter and will collaborate with REGIS-ER on natural resource management in Sakoira and Filingue communes. The activity will also continue to operationalize the shock responsive approach and lay the groundwork for project activities. The quarterly report includes six annexes: Indicator Table, Financial table, Success Stories, Quarterly Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Report, Quarterly Shock Response Contingency Planning Report, and Organizational Chart. The report provides a comprehensive overview of TerresEauVie's progress during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2020 and highlights the activity's achievements and challenges. In terms of implementation challenges, TerresEauVie faced difficulties in completing recruitment activities and finalizing data collection and analysis. However, the activity made significant progress in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and operationalizing the shock responsive approach. The activity will continue to work on these challenges and will seek support from USAID to facilitate resolution. The planned interventions for the next quarter include supporting the validation process in the two communes, collaborating with REGIS-ER on natural resource management, and continuing to operationalize the shock responsive approach. The activity will also continue to lay the groundwork for project activities and will seek to address the challenges faced during the first quarter.
