Abstract
The program aimed to develop and strengthen the skills of healthcare providers in providing family planning services, counseling, and prescribing contraceptive methods safely. The training program was conducted from April 7 to 18, 2014, at the Maissa Hotel conference room. The facilitators were four individuals, including two Assistant Medical Officers from the Regional Health Directorate, one Midwife (Family Planning Focal Point) from the Central Service of Reproductive Health, and one Family Planning Supervisor from PSI. The participants consisted of 25 healthcare providers, including 20 from Sikasso and 5 from Bamako. The training program was divided into two phases: theoretical and practical. The theoretical phase focused on two modules: communication interpersonnel/Counseling and elements of contraceptive technology. The modules covered topics such as approach to clinical formation, concept of reproductive health, anatomy and physiology of reproduction, communication, counseling, and contraceptive methods. The practical phase consisted of four morning sessions, focusing on insertion/retraction of Jadelle and IUD, initial, specific, and follow-up counseling, and management of side effects. The participants also practiced demonstrations and exercises on mannequins to master the techniques of insertion/retraction before practicing on real clients. The training program used a participatory methodology, incorporating various techniques such as illustrated presentations, brainstorming, role-playing, simulations, demonstrations on anatomical models, group work, case studies, and practical exercises. The facilitators used a range of tools and materials, including anatomical models, a penis model, contraceptive samples, technical equipment for insertion and removal of IUD and Jadelle, and a computer and multimedia equipment. The training program aimed to equip healthcare providers with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide high-quality family planning services, including counseling, prescribing contraceptive methods, and managing side effects. The program also emphasized the importance of communication interpersonnel and the need for healthcare providers to be aware of the latest developments in contraceptive technology. At the end of the training program, participants received a manual on family planning and reproductive health, and an attestation of completion was awarded to those who acquired the required level of knowledge and skills. The program also emphasized the importance of collaboration between PSI and healthcare services, including the provision of materials, training, and follow-up support. The training program was a significant step towards improving family planning services in the Sikasso region, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the reproductive health of women and families in the region.
