Abstract
Evaluation covers the period 1/76-1/81; no methodology is specified. (1) Agro-economics research has proceeded in the specific areas of export agriculture (coffee and cacao); commercial livestock production and commercialization; savannah rice and cotton farming; banana, manioc, and palm farming; and agricultural development strategies. CIRES programs are coordinated with those of other Ivorian institutions. Research results have indicted that intra- regional environmental and demographic differences must be taken into account in developing local agricultural intensification and mechanization strategies. (2) Human resources research has four foci -- demography and education, health, and employment economics. Demographic researchers are studying natural population growth, immigration, and internal migrations, although financial and personnel constrictions have limited these efforts. Another study on the relevance of educational content to employment needs and salaries is under way. (3) In the area of industrial economics, an investigation of alternative methods of financing industrial manufacturing has been completed and published. (4) Research in the fields of international commerce and economic integration has emphasized the importance and stability of various Ivorian exports (e.g.; palm oil, soy, and sugar) in the international market, and the positive and negative effects of existing institutions and agreements affecting the Ivory Coast"s role in international commerce. (5) Lastly, in the area of development financing, CIRES has recently initiated studies on monetary issues in African countries to highlight the problems of international financing in these developing economies.
