Abstract
The project will be implemented by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Works and Supply of the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ). Phase I of the project focuses on resealing 33 km of the road on the Zambian side, between the Kafue River Bridge and the Chirundu Border Post. Potholes will be repaired and damaged parts of the existing pavement edges replaced with bituminous material; eroded shoulder material will be reshaped and compacted to the original design cross section; and a single-wearing course of bituminous spray and chips will be applied. This resealing should be completed before the 1981 rainy season. The GRZ will not contribute financially to Phase I, but will provide field supervision, field lab testing personnel, and other technical expertise. The project will significantly enhance economic development in Southern Africa, benefiting Zimbabwean farmers who produce maize for export and Zambian consumers, the major clientele for foods and consumer goods produced in Zimbabwe. Amendment of 9/18/81 (PD-AAI-889) authorizes Phase II of the project, which will rehabilitate 12 km of the road in Zimbabwe and the remaining 49 km in Zambia.
