Abstract
The "Rehabilitation Guideline for the Management of Persons with Traumatic Brain Injury" was developed by Humanity & Inclusion, a project funded by the USAID and implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Vietnam. This guideline aims to provide rehabilitation specialists with the necessary tools to support individuals with TBI. The guideline is based on the latest scientific evidence and internationally recognized best practices. It was developed in collaboration with international experts and Vietnamese specialists, ensuring contextualization and ownership of the guidelines. The document consists of two types of guidelines: general rehabilitation guidelines and technical guidelines for specific conditions, including occupational therapy. The general rehabilitation guidelines provide wide-ranging recommendations on care provision and quality principles, while the technical guidelines offer more specific and detailed technical guidance for rehabilitation professionals. The guideline is divided into several sections, including an introduction, pathways and principles of rehabilitation, and the rehabilitation cycle. The introduction highlights the need for guidelines in the management of TBI, defines the target population, and outlines the aim of the guideline. It also provides a statement of intent, levels of evidence, and a definition of TBI. The section on TBI epidemiology provides an overview of the prevalence and incidence of TBI, while the section on primary prevention discusses strategies to prevent TBI. The pathways and principles of rehabilitation section outlines the rehabilitation cycle, which includes assessment, goal setting, therapy planning, intervention, and discharge and follow-up. The section on occupational therapy assessment provides guidance on the assessment process, including the use of standardized tools and the identification of occupational performance areas. The goal setting and therapy planning section outlines the process of setting goals and developing a therapy plan, while the occupational therapy intervention section provides guidance on the implementation of occupational therapy interventions. The guideline emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation, involving healthcare professionals from various disciplines, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and medical and nursing care. The guideline also highlights the need for person-centered and family-centered care, which involves working with individuals and their families to identify their needs and goals. The guideline provides recommendations for the intensity and duration of occupational therapy rehabilitation, as well as guidance on risk assessment and intervention. The section on reporting provides guidance on the documentation of rehabilitation progress and outcomes. Overall, the "Rehabilitation Guideline for the Management of Persons with Traumatic Brain Injury" provides a comprehensive framework for the rehabilitation of individuals with TBI. It emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, person-centered and family-centered care, and the use of standardized tools and evidence-based practices. The guideline is a valuable resource for rehabilitation professionals working with individuals with TBI in Vietnam and other countries.
