In Mozambique, the Programa Para Fortalecimento da Mídia em Moçambique conducted a biodiversity analysis in April 2016.
2016 · 9 pages

Abstract
The analysis focused on 15 newspapers, including Notícias, CanalMoz, and Mediafax. A total of 21 articles about biodiversity were published in these newspapers during the month, a decrease of 7 articles compared to March. The newspapers Notícias, CanalMoz, Whamphula Fax, and MidiaLab stood out for publishing the most articles on this topic, with 9, 5, and 2 articles, respectively. The articles published in April focused primarily on the effects of the severe drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon, which affected the southern and central regions of Mozambique. The government declared a 90-day red alert in response to the drought, which left many families in a state of food insecurity. The articles published in the newspapers were largely superficial and did not question or respond to existing policies aimed at addressing the drought. The articles also highlighted the issue of poaching, with several articles reporting on the seizure of ivory and the arrest of individuals suspected of poaching. The articles were largely based on press releases from institutions and did not provide in-depth analysis or critical commentary on the issue. In contrast to previous months, no journalist published more than one article on biodiversity in April.
