USAID. MISSION TO BOTSWANA
Grant is provided to the Government of Botswana (GOB) to research, develop, and install renewable energy technologies (RET"s) in three of the country"s nine districts.

Abstract
Project will be implemented by the Rural Industry Innovation Center (RIIC), a non-profit host country institution, and by the Botswana Technology Center (BTC), with technical assistance from USAID and the Peace Corps. Data on villagers" cooking and heating practices and fuel use will be collected. Based on analysis of these data, a Village Awareness Campaign to encourage wood conservation and alternative cooking and heating practices with RET"s will be introduced. A total of eight demonstration units will be constructed, followed by installation of 1,000 domestic technology units such as solar-powered earthen ovens and water heaters, and evaporative coolers. Production and maintenance of these units will be taught to 250 villagers, GOB employees, and extension workers. Wind/hand pump systems of limited capability will be installed in eight small villages, and 100 pumper/mechanics will be trained in pump and windmill maintenance. The RIIC will conduct research into development of institutional RET"s, which will be produced and installed as follows: (1) 100 solar water heaters; (2) two photovoltaic water pumps; (3) two integrated wind/water pumping systems; (4) eight pedal-powered sorghum dehuller/grinders; (5) six vaccine cold chain systems and three photovoltaic electrification schemes; (6) two pilot fuel wood lot sites (funded under Project 633007700) for demonstration and management training puirposes; and (7) portable wood stove prototypes designed and tested. Training, including short-term participant training in the U.S., will be provided to a total of 400 GOB extension workers and villagers in production, management and maintainance of the above systems. RIIC buildings will be expanded, and three village training facilities built. The Botswana Renewable Energy Coordinating Committee will contract a consultant to conduct national energy assessment studies. Approximately 34,000 villagers and GOB personnel will directly benefit from the project. Amendment of 3/12/84 adjusts project outputs and funding (as detailed in revised logframe and financial plan) to reflect more realistic and attainable final project outputs. The changes are as recommended in the midterm evaluation of 11/83. (PD-BAQ-860)
